How Does a Self-Guided Walking Holiday Work?

A self-guided walking holiday allows you to follow a long-distance trail independently, without having to organise all the accommodation and luggage arrangements yourself.

You walk at your own pace, decide when to stop and enjoy the route without a guide or group accompanying you.

At Norfolk Walking Holidays, we arrange your accommodation and luggage transfers and provide the route information you need for your chosen itinerary.

You still have the freedom to enjoy the walk in your own way.

What does self-guided actually mean?

A self-guided walking holiday means that you walk independently, without a guide or an organised group. You might be walking on your own, with your partner or with a few friends.

The lovely thing is that you can enjoy the walk exactly as you please. There's no one telling you when to set off, how quickly to walk or where to stop along the way.

We take care of the planning, accommodation and luggage transfers, leaving you free to enjoy the walking. You know where you're going each day and where you'll be staying that evening, but how you spend the hours in between is entirely up to you.

What happens when I book?

Once you've chosen your walking holiday and the number of days you'd like to walk, we'll get to work organising everything for you.

We'll arrange your accommodation, luggage transfers and any additional transport needed along the route.  Once everything is confirmed, we'll send you the details of your holiday, so you'll know exactly where you're staying each night and how your walking days fit together.

You'll also receive your walking information, including the daily routes, maps and guidebook, so you can look through everything before you arrive in Norfolk.

And of course, if you have any questions before setting off, we're always happy to help.

Do I have to book my own accommodation?

Accommodation on the Norfolk Coast Path

No you don't!

We arrange your accommodation for the whole holiday, including the night you arrive and the night after your final day's walk, so there's no need to spend hours searching for somewhere to stay in each village.

We choose accommodation that works with your walking itinerary, although it's not always possible to stay directly on the trail.  In some of the quieter parts of Norfolk, places to stay can be limited, so we may need to arrange a short taxi transfer.

We'll organise those transfers where needed and explain everything in your holiday information, so you know exactly what to expect.

How does luggage transfer work?

One of the great advantages of booking a walking holiday with us is that you don't have to carry all your belongings on your back!

We arrange for your main luggage to be collected from your accommodation each morning and delivered to your next overnight stop, leaving you free to enjoy the day's walk with just a small daypack.

You'll only need to carry what you might need during the day, such as waterproofs, an extra layer, water, lunch or snacks and your walking information.

We'll explain everything about the luggage transfers in your holiday itinerary, including when your bags need to be ready for collection.

How do I find my way?

Signage on the Norfolk Coast Path

Norfolk's long-distance trails are generally very well signposted, and it's very rare for our walkers to have any difficulty finding their way.

We provide you with detailed information for each day's walk, along with a guidebook and an Ordnance Survey map booklet.  Both are excellent and should give you everything you need to follow the route.

I would always suggest having a quick look at the day's walk before setting off, just so you have an idea of where you're heading and what to expect along the way.

And although many people like using their phones for navigation, it's worth keeping your guidebook and maps handy too, particularly where the mobile signal isn't very good.

Can I walk at my own pace?

Absolutely!  That's one of the lovely things about a self-guided walking holiday. There's no group to keep up with and no set timetable to follow.

If you want to stop and watch the birds, take photographs, explore a village or enjoy a leisurely lunch, that's entirely up to you.  It's your holiday, after all!

The only thing to bear in mind is the distance you're walking each day, so do allow yourself plenty of time to reach your next accommodation without feeling rushed.

Are meals included?

This depends on the holiday you've booked, but we'll make sure you know exactly what's included before you set off.

We also provide plenty of information about places to eat along the way, whether that's a pub for lunch, a café for a coffee or somewhere to pick up provisions for a picnic.

Some stretches of the Norfolk Coast Path have plenty of places to stop, while on Peddars Way and some of the quieter inland trails, cafés and shops can be few and far between.

We'll point these out in your walking information so you can plan ahead, particularly on days when you'll need to take lunch with you.

What happens if my accommodation isn't directly on the trail?

We always try to find accommodation as close to the trail as possible, but that's not always practical, particularly in some of the smaller Norfolk villages where places to stay can be limited.

Sometimes there might be a short walk to your accommodation, while on other occasions we'll arrange a taxi to collect you from the trail and take you to your overnight stop.

If a taxi transfer is needed, we'll organise and pay for it as part of your holiday, so you won't have to worry about making those arrangements yourself.

Everything will be explained in your holiday information, including where you'll be collected and where to start walking the following morning.

What if something goes wrong?

Broken ankle

Life happens, and even the best-planned walking holiday doesn't always go quite to plan. I know this from personal experience, having broken my ankle whilst out walking. That was certainly the end of that particular walk for a while!  Hopefully this won't be you.

But, if you do have a problem during your holiday, whether you're feeling unwell, struggling with a day's walk or something unexpected happens, please do get in touch with us. We're usually on hand to help and will do our best to sort things out, whether that's arranging a taxi, helping with a change of plans or simply offering some advice.

Of course, if there's a serious accident or medical emergency, you should contact the emergency services first.

The important thing is that although you're walking independently, it doesn't mean you're entirely on your own if something goes wrong.

Is a self-guided holiday suitable for someone walking alone?

Absolutely! We have plenty of solo walkers who book holidays with us, and they walk all of our Norfolk trails.

"Very well organised, all the accommodation was very good. As a solo traveller, I always felt comfortable and had a really good time"

If you enjoy your own company and are happy finding your way along the trail, there's no reason why you shouldn't have a wonderful walking holiday on your own.

You'll need to be comfortable walking independently, of course, but we'll have arranged your accommodation, luggage transfers and any transport needed along the way.

The most important thing is choosing a route and daily distances that you're happy with. And remember, although you're walking alone, you can always get in touch with us if you need help.

What's the difference between booking a package and organising everything myself?

Planning a client walk

There's absolutely nothing wrong with organising your own walking holiday, and plenty of people do just that.

But it does take time! You need to work out how far you want to walk each day, find accommodation in the right places, arrange luggage transfers and sometimes organise taxis where there isn't anywhere suitable to stay directly on the trail.

That's where we come in. We know the Norfolk trails well and have already worked out the itineraries, accommodation stops and practical arrangements that make the walks work.

You still have all the freedom of walking independently, but without having to spend hours putting everything together yourself.

Is a self-guided walking holiday right for me?

If you:

  • enjoy walking at your own pace
  • stopping whenever you fancy
  • having the freedom to explore along the way

then a self-guided holiday could be just what you're looking for.

You don't need to be an experienced long-distance walker, but you should be comfortable with the daily distances and happy following a route independently.

We have several Norfolk trails to choose from, each offering something a little different, and a choice of itineraries depending on how many miles you'd like to walk each day.

Have a look at our Norfolk walking holidays, and if you're not sure which route or itinerary would suit you best, just get in touch. We're always happy to talk through the options.
